ABOUT:
I have been witnessing in Seattle for more than 10 years and for more than a year now as a consistent ministry. In starting a conversation with a stranger, I have found it is necessary to talk on a topic we can relate with, sports, weather, where we have been, etc. After talking for awhile and there is a lull in the conversation I ask the question, “what do you think about Jesus?” and then listening actively, agreeing wherever possible, letting them talk as long as they want.
Then I can share my story or perhaps I’ve heard an excuse I can speak to – always in a relational way that makes a stranger, into a friend. Some people are so angry that all I can do is say, “I’d like to talk again with you sometime. If you live around here, we may run into each other.” A second meeting is, almost always, more relational.
Moving forward, I believe all Christians are called to witness, not all in connecting with strangers, but all in some way personally helping others to know Jesus. There are excuses Christians use to avoid, “The Great Commission”, mostly stemming from fear. Some stemming from just not wanting to confuse anybody, or waiting until they have become closer friends with the person they’re talking to, or feeling they have waited so long it will be difficult to say, “Jesus is the most important person in my life.”
What I have done feels natural and easy, and I’ve asked people in my church to use that same approach, once there is a simple conversational connection ask, “What do you think about Jesus?” It has worked for others so now I call it a Witnessing Project.
I still need you to partner with me in financial support and prayer. Now I have added another ask – partner personally with me in this Witnessing Project. Call me and we can share and talk about a question or a belief issue that we both run into. This could be really good for both of us!
